Vignette obligation in Switzerland - Important to know

All vehicles and trailers up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight are subject to the vignette requirement in Switzerland. All motorways and motorways are affected by the obligation to display a toll sticker; these are signposted with a white-green sign for motorways.

For all vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, i.e. motorbikes, trikes, quads and cars as well as trailers, Switzerland only offers annual vignettes (duration corresponds to the calendar year), which are valid from 1 December of the previous year until 31 January of the following year.

For a journey in or through Switzerland, e.g. in August 2025, you therefore need an annual vignette for 2025. If you buy the digital vignette for Switzerland at the end of the year, it can be used for a maximum validity period of 14 months.

ATTENTION:
  • If you order an e-vignette Switzerland during the year, it is valid until 31 January of the following year at the latest!
  • Even if you only drive through Switzerland for a single day, the purchase of an annual vignette is mandatory!

Toll for motorhomes and vehicles over 3.5 tonnes

Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes must pay the lump-sum heavy vehicle charge (PSVA) in Switzerland. The PSVA is levied not only for driving on all roads (not only for motorways and motorway-like roads with white-green signs) but also for staying in Switzerland, even if the vehicle is not moved, e.g. during the parking period on holiday at a campsite.

The only exceptions to the lump-sum heavy vehicle charge (PSVA) are the access routes from Austria into the Swiss customs exclusion area of Samnaun.

You can easily purchase the lump-sum heavy vehicle charge (PSVA) for your motorhome or vehicle over 3.5 tons here on mautwelt.de.

Please note:

  • if a trailer weighing more than 3.5 tonnes is attached to the vehicle, the PSVA must be purchased for it at a manned customs office at the border to Switzerland,
  • if the trailer weighs up to 3.5 tonnes, a vignette is required.

Driving without a vignette - checks on compulsory tolls in Switzerland

In Switzerland, the police check compliance with the obligation to display a toll sticker. If you are driving on toll roads and do not have a valid vignette Switzerland, you will face a heavy fine and will also have to buy a vignette.

The fines are currently:

  • No valid vignette Switzerland despite compulsory toll: 200 CHF
  • Adhesive toll sticker not properly affixed: 200 CHF

E-Vignette Switzerland - Your advantages at mautwelt.de

  • Save time: You can conveniently order the digital vignette for Switzerland online in just a few clicks and no longer have to stop to buy a paper vignette.

  • Change of vehicle: The e-vignette Switzerland is linked to the number plate and not to the vehicle. This means that you only need one e-vignette for different vehicles when changing number plates, as long as you change the number plate at the same time.

  • No annoying scratching off: You save yourself the time-consuming scraping off of expired adhesive vignettes.

  • No expiry of the vignette in the event of a broken windscreen: In contrast to a paper vignette, you do not have to organise a new one if your windscreen breaks, as the validity of the electronic vignette Switzerland remains valid.
